The Fast Diet

One of my very special friends who lives overseas posted me a surprise gift which arrived last week! I was very excited to see open it up and see what she could have sent to me – something from Holland, a keepsake of sorts, perhaps some delicious Holland waffles she brings when she’s in SA. One of my very special friends who lives overseas posted me a surprise gift which arrived last week! I was very excited to see open it up and see what she could have sent to me – something from Holland, a keepsake of sorts, perhaps some delicious Holland waffles she brings when she’s in SA. No, I got sent…….A diet book! (just kidding, Dodo!)

On a serious note, my friend who I refer to as “Dodo” understands my frustrations with weight loss and after sending me links and YouTube videos to watch, she’s now sent me the official book written after the BBC documentary. The book is all about “Intermittent Fasting”.

When I first heard the word “Fasting”, I wanted to run the other direction. I LOVE food! I love to be social and I enjoy food. I can do calorie restricted diets, yes – but fast…..OH HELL NO! I decided to give it a read (after all, it came ALL the way from Holland to me!) and I have to admit I’m pleasantly surprised and I think this may be the type of diet that could suit my lifestyle perfectly.

About the Diet

I’m not going to go into all the explanations about why it works and how it works. I’m going to give you a quick summary on the concept and you can decide if this is something you want to consider checking out or trying for yourself.

In a nutshell, the book explains that human beings 100s of years ago, we went through periods of hunger and periods where we weren’t very hungry. Our bodies were supposedly designed to go through these different periods. Over the years, we have been taught to eat regularly e.g. 5 meals a day, but with fast foods and food being so easily available, the snacking has gone a bit overboard and we are now starting to see a world struggling with obesity. Plus, people aren’t choosing to snack on the right foods.

The authors of the book actually do the diet and lose weight. They do tests (weight, BMI, glucose, cholesterol, etc) before they start the diet and then they re-test after a 3 month period. The results are excellent.

The concept is that you eat 5 days per week and fast 2 days per week. Fasting to me typically means not eating, however in this particular diet, it is suggesting you eat 500 calories per day (600 calories for men) on those days. You drink black coffee, teas and water throughout the day, but Dr Michael Mosley (the one author) mentioned he did wait around 12 hours before eating his last meal of the day whereas the other author, Mimi Spencer, ate throughout the day, but kept with her 500 calorie count.

On the non-fasting days, you eat how you normally eat. No need to count calories. You will still lose weight.

They both had great results – not only weight loss, but overall health results.

I took a look on Amazon to see what reviews are there and there are some amazing reviews and most are positive reviews. Out of 701 reviews on Amazon.co.uk, they have a 4.5 / 5 review rating. On Amazon.com, they have 28 customer reviews and have a 4/5 rating. Keep in mind this book was only released in January and was first launched in the UK. Here are the links for your interest:

Pros and Cons (according to Mwa!)

I like the sound of this diet for so many reasons. Here are my pros and cons for this diet:

Pros

  • You don’t deprive yourself
  • The diet is flexible
  • Proven health benefits
  • Won’t affect you socially (it’s sucks going out to dinner to friends and saying “I’m on a diet, so I’m sorry I can’t eat the food you spent the whole day preparing!”)
  • Weight loss is good

Cons

This was a difficult one to identify. You lose weight, there are health benefits and it doesn’t sound THAT difficult. However, I don’t think the diet is for everyone as you need to be in relatively good health to do this diet, so as always – consult your physician before starting a a new diet or eating regime.

Where to buy

I checked a few sites in South Africa out and found Kalahari is stocking it (link below):
