DIY Bio Garden { CD Cases }

Kids are curious by nature, and as mothers it’s our responsibility to harness that curiosity and turn it into new teaching opportunities. Learning about nature is a big part of any child’s development, and there’s no better place to start their biology education than at home.

While there are many ingenious tools and containers available in stores, you can start small with recyclable items that you most likely have at home. Like CD cases for instance! This fun little project gives your children the opportunity to really see what’s happening underground when that little seed starts to grow.

You will need:

  • A see-through CD case
  • Soil
  • Fertiliser (optional)
  • Beans

Now to get started:

  1. Open the CD case and fill it halfway with soil. Then, place your bean somewhere in the middle.
  2. Tape the case closed so that the kids can’t accidentally open it.
  3. Stand the CD case on its side, so that the hinges are at the top. You’ll see that you now have an opening at the top through which to water the bean!
  4. Water the bean with a few drops of water a day, and watch it start to grow!
  5. Once the bean has sprouted, give each child a permanent marker and ask them to label the different parts of the plant by writing on the side of the CD case.
